The Dip

On an island measured in footsteps rather than acres, the swimming pool has always been an uneasy guest. Lots are small, water is everywhere, and the grandest gesture a backyard can make is often the one it declines to.

And yet there are August afternoons—windless, glaring, the ocean churned brown by a passing storm—when a private place to cool off feels less like luxury and more like good planning. The answer, we believe, is not the sprawling pool of the mainland suburbs. It is the dip.

A dip pool is small by intention, not compromise. Ten feet, perhaps twelve. Deep enough to submerge, plain enough to disappear. Set flush into a cedar deck and edged in the same weathered gray as the boardwalk beyond, it reads as part of the architecture rather than an interruption of the landscape.

The restraint pays practical dividends. A small vessel heats quickly in June and holds its warmth into September. It asks for less equipment, less chemical upkeep, and far less of the lot—leaving room for the outdoor shower, the clothesline, the stand of shadblow that was there first.

Most importantly, a dip keeps its place in the hierarchy of the island. The ocean remains the main event. The pool is simply where you rinse the morning off, float for a moment before dinner, and listen—because on Fire Island you are never far enough from the water to stop hearing it.
